One in three Native women will experience rape in their lifetimes, 86% of their perpetrators are non-Native. Across other demographics, perpetrators act within their own racial groups. 68% of sexual violence cases on the reservation are refused by the DOJ for prosecution. “What’s that about if it’s not about creating a vulnerable group?” says Tina Olson, founding Member of Mending the Sacred Hoop.
Through working with survivors and advocates we unravel the effects of historical events, such as the Boarding School Era, in destroying a culture, and explore the resulting rates of sexual violence, poverty and addictions in Native communities.
